There are several elements that are involved in creating and maintaining lasting and genuine relationships through communication, two of which are recognizing body language cues and using effective listening skills. What is important to remember is that attentive listening needs to be continuous. His or her problems and needs are important. Inaccurate assessment of the communication level will lead to a misinterpretation of what is being conveyed, resulting in ineffective communication. Most of what is known about the listening process stems from research on native language development; however, as the importance of teaching listening comprehension has increased, so has the inquiry into second language listening comprehension. Good listening is about 50 percent of counseling, and it is also a useful tool with family, with friends, and at work.
